National Jurist Magazine
Getting published in parenting magazines is a lot like getting published anywhere else; it takes research and tenacity. Freelance writers should investigate markets, submit query letters (also called pitches), and always maintain a professional image when freelance writing for magazines. Writing for parenting publications is no different.
Getting Published in Parenting Magazines
The first step to publication is market research. Read parenting magazines to learn what they're publishing. Smart freelance writers will head down to the library and read the last 4 to 6 issues of each magazine they want to pitch. Write down trends and make note of what topics have been covered recently. Don't pitch something that was just covered last month. For regional parenting magazines, review the website and ask for back issues. Some regional publications will send samples for a small postage fee.
Next, find the writer's guidelines for each publication. To find writer's guidelines, check the magazine's website or Writer's Market. The Child Care and Parental Guidance section of the 2010 Writer's Market has over 40 national and regional parenting writing markets. Keep in mind this is just a tiny fraction of available regional parenting markets.
