Youth sex offenders constitute 20% of all people charged with a sexual offence in North America according to research conducted by Worling and Curwin*. In recent years, sexually aggressive youth has become a serious issue and is appearing in more and more courtrooms. Interventions with teen sex offenders are essential as well as prevention.

Interventions with Youth Sex Offenders

Interventions are guided by four principles in working with sexually aggressive youth.

1. Treatment must be directed at preventing further victimization.
2. Legal accountability for sexual offences must be acknowledged and communicated.
3. Evaluation of young offender must include a complete assessment conducted by a therapist who is fully trained to work with sex offenders.
4. Peer group treatment is designed especially for teen sex offenders and is a preferred mode of intervention.

Youth in treatment are provided with anger management and impulse control skills, life skills, basic sex education and a variety of strategies to help them sort out their distorted thinking. Treatment providers struggle with limited resources and are challenged to provide meet the demanding need of these youth and how many there are nowadays.
