Perhaps no other musical instrument has had such a large effect on modern popular music than the Fender Telecaster. Also one of the first electric guitars produced on a large scale, the Telecaster has influenced the sound of country, blues, and rock and roll in an unparalleled way. This guitar remains in production today and is not too different than when it was first developed.

A Brief History of the Fender Telecaster

As far back as the 1920s, musicians were wiring up their instruments to make them louder and change their tones. In general, this was done by individuals or electronics repair shops and has its roots in the blues explosion of the time. After the tumultuous era of reconstruction in the American South, many African American blues musicians moved North, especially Chicago and New York. The trademark music of Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama had found a new audience, and the clubs started to fill up quickly; so quickly, in fact, that it became difficult to hear the music.

Many wondered how to make it louder. Thus, the electric guitar was born, originally as a simple projection tool for acoustic instruments. A change of tone had never been the goal. Soon, however, the advantages of solid body guitar construction became known to musicians trying to avoid the natural feedback produced by amplified instrumentation.
